Transition
The staff at Brunel are sensitive to the needs of children and their parents/carers when starting nursery and moving up into the main school when starting Reception.
We aim to work in partnership with parents/carers and the reception teachers to ensure that these transitions are smooth, carefully planned out to meet the needs of the child and their parents/carers and help us to identify any further support that might be needed.
Transition to Brunel Nursery School
- Nursery Induction meeting with the Headteacher – these happen before the term that your child starts Brunel.
- Key worker meeting – the day before your child starts you will meet with their allocated key worker. They will gather information that will help your child settle when they start.
- Settling in session – your child will have a ‘settling in’ session for 1 hour to start. The number of ‘settling in’ visits will depend on the individual child as all children adapt differently to new environments.
- Full session – once your child’s key worker is happy with their wellbeing, your child will stay for the whole session.
Transition to Reception
In the Summer term before your child leaves nursery, we will ensure that all children are ready for the move to Reception through:
- Circle times - Ensuring that the children are informed and prepared for moving to reception through stories, pictures and circle times.
- Teacher visits - Reception teachers will come and visit the children in their familiar environment as often as possible.
- Moving up day - children who are transitioning to St Matthew’s will go and spend time in their new class. A member of the nursery team will accompany them to support this. The number of these moving up days will depend on individual children’s specific needs.
For those children that are not attending the reception class at St Matthew’s, their teachers are invited to visit them within the Brunel setting at a time that is convenient to them.
