Year 4 - Kestrels

Welcome to Kestrels!

Welcome to Kestrels!

I am Mr Woodward and I am the class teacher in Kestrels. Mrs Patel is our class teaching assistant.

Our Day
We start our day with Maths, followed by English (after a 15 minute break). We study a variety of topics in the afternoon which include:  Creative Curriculum, Science, Religious Education, Spanish and Computers.

Also throughout the week we have lessons in spellings, guided reading and reading comprehension.

Creative Curriculum

  •         Vikings
  •         Wild West
  •         Inventors and Explorers

In science we explore ourselves and the world around us through lots of investigation. The areas we look at in Kestrels are:

  •           Diet and our teeth: humans and animals
  •           Sounds
  •           Life Cycles
  •           Electricity

Physical Education
Kestrels explore movement through dance and we practice and improve our balance and co-ordination through gymnastics. We learn to work with equipment such as balls and rackets through various games and improve our running, jumping and hand-eye co-ordination in athletics.
Our year 4 children attend Blackburn Leisure Centre every Tuesday morning where they are learning how to swim. This is a very important skill and we have lots of fun learning!

  •          Harvest and God
  •          Christmas around the world
  •          Worship in a synagogue
  •          Easter Victory
  •          Islam and the Qur’an
  •          People with faith

Kestrels receive homework every Friday which is to be returned the following Tuesday. The homework builds on learning that has taken place throughout the week. Homework also includes spellings and times tables.
Reading books are taken home every week and children can change their reading books when they have completed reading one. Please help your child to succeed by making sure your child reads at least four times a week and by supporting them with their homework. This will greatly help with your child’s learning within school.
It’s an exciting year with lots of learning and fun. We all look after each other in Kestrels and celebrate our successes together!

Don't forget to drop in at the end of the day if you need any help with anything, or call via the office to leave me a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you for all your help and support so far this year,

Mr Woodward
