Welcome to Year 2 - Swallows!
Take a look at our pieces of art work from today! (08/10/2020)
We have been learning all about different shading techniques and we have been using HB, 4B and 6B pencils to draw a portrait of a mill child...
IN OTHER NEWS... THE SWALLOWS ARE FAMOUS!
Last week we went to Blackburn museum to learn all about how Blackburn has changed and we had LOTS of fun!
We are now on Blackburn Museum's Facebook and Instagram... take a look:
My name is Miss Thompson and I am delighted to be teaching the Year 2 Swallows this year. Mrs Monk and Mrs Ismail will also be helping us in Year 2.
* PE - Our PE day is Friday, however, it is important that PE kits are in school at all times.
* Homework is given out every Friday and should be returned on Monday. All children have a homework book to complete their tasks in. Homework includes: home reading (3 parent signatures required), spellings (test every Monday), Mathletics and one other piece to be completed.
Take a look at what we will be learning in Autumn:
This half term we will be creating:
This half term we will be covering the following areas in our Maths lessons...
Addition and Subtraction
Our topic for this half term is 'Who Worked in the Mills?'. In Geography we will be researching human and physical features of our locality, such as where Blackburn is on a map and finding various cities and towns that are around where we live, looking at what job opportunities are available in Blackburn and suggesting improvements for our local area.
In History we will be looking at Blackburn and how it has changed throughout the years, in particular, looking into why the cotton mills were so important.
In Art we will be using different grades of pencil to create a portrait of a Victorian mill child.
In Design & Technology we will be creating our very own Victorian blanket using textiles.
Our topic for this half term is 'Animals Including Humans'. We will be learning about and noticing that both animals and humans have offspring which grow into adults. We will also be looking closely at the similarities and differences between humans and animals.
This half term we will be focusing on 'movement skills' learning the 7 fundamental skills:
Phonics Play - https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/
Phonics Play is a resource that we use in school and it has lots of different games to help children practise recognition of sounds, blending and segmenting. The website has decided to offer free access to parents during this time and the login details are:
Mathletics - https://login.mathletics.com/
Mathletics is an online platform that school already uses and that most of you will be familiar with. It has various maths concepts for your children to practise. I will regularly set tasks for your child to complete and view their progress. Your child has their very own login details for this.
Times Table Rockstars - www.ttrockstars.com
Times Tables Rock Stars is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice. Your child has their very own login details for this.
Purple Mash - https://www.purplemash.com/login/
Purple Mash is a fantastic tool that has lots of different activities on for your children to explore. It is used in school to help children with their learning across many areas of the curriculum. To login to the website you will first need to find the school’s login page by clicking on ‘Find my school’s login page.’ Then you will need your child’s login details which they already have.
Scholastic Learn at Home - https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome/grades-prek-k.html (Alternatively you can use google to search for ‘Scholastic Learn at Home’)
This is a website that has been set up specifically for school closures. It has stories and activities based around various different topics that link to your children’s learning. More activities are being added to the site every day.
Oxford Reading Tree - www.oxfordowl.co.uk
A great website from the makers of Biff and Chip books. This gives access to a huge range of ORT books which the children can read. A very useful site. The login details are:
Sumdog - https://www.sumdog.com/
Sumdog is similar to Mathletics as teachers can set work and view the children’s progress. It has different tasks relating to reading, spelling and mathematics. When your child logs in they will have some ‘quick fire questions’ and they may need some adult support with these. After this they will be able to access the tasks and these are all in game form so the children will really enjoy playing them as well as practising the different skills. Each child has an individual login and this has been given to your child to take home. As with the rest of the online learning websites we do recommend that you play the games alongside your children as they may need some initial help to follow the instructions.
