From the Chair of Governors

Here is another Governing Body update from Mr Fred Kershaw, our Chair of Governors.

‘I was privileged to be able to attend the memorial service for Mrs Solkar on the 25th May. It was lovely that so many members of Mrs Solkar’s family were able to attend this celebration of her contribution to our school over the last eleven years. I would like to particularly thank Mrs Molyneux, the School Council and Mrs Hussain for the excellent job they made of planning and preparing for the service. It has been a difficult year this year with the deaths of Rayyan Hussain, Mrs Solkar and Mrs Heyes but the service last week reminded me again just how we as a school community care for each other. Thank you for your support in sending children in to school on that day in different clothes – altogether just over £300 was raised for Cancer Research.

If you have been to school recently you might have noticed our smart new windows and doors. We are particularly pleased with the new doors in the Doves’ and Woodpeckers’ classrooms as these classes have not had outside doors before. This is safer in terms of emergencies but also allows the children to leave through their own classroom doors at the end of the day.

During the summer holidays we will be having more work completed in school to further improve the school environment. This will include new window shutters around the back of the school and tarmacking the paved area in front of school and down the side of the entrance to the car park (replacing the paving stones which are becoming uneven).

The Achievement Committee of the Governing Body continues to monitor standards throughout the school. This committee met on the 16th March and the 4th May. It is due to meet again on the 6th July. At the most recent meeting Governors discussed information about the standards children are reaching across the school, received updates on assessment procedures and Key Stage 1 and received reports from Governors who had been in to meet with members of staff.

The Resources Committee is due to meet on the 8th June. At this meeting the Governors will monitor how the school’s budget is being spent. Matters related to staffing and the school building will also be discussed. The Full Governing Body last met in March and is due to meet again on the 15th June.

I thoroughly enjoyed sharing in the Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations on the 27th May. The children looked very smart in their ‘best’ clothes and we were so thankful that the weather stayed fine which allowed the children to eat their special lunch outside. Thank you to Miss Giles for organising such a fun day for the school and to all the kitchen staff for their extra efforts.

The Governors were very proud of our Year 2 and Year 6 children recently as they sat their SATs tests. They showed an excellent attitude to the tests and we trust that they will achieve all they are capable of.

On behalf of the Governors I would like to thank you all for your continued support for our school.’
